Not impressed at “Impressions” restaurant at Maxims Hotel: nice ambience but horrible food service

So we tried the sit-down buffet at Impressions in Maxims Hotel, but we sat down eating nothing for a long while. They say Impressions is a fine dining restaurant, but the food service is not so fine. I could ignore the hungry mosquitoes of Impressions feasting on my feet that night, but waiting so long for our food at a buffet where food is supposed to be served nonstop fails expectations. When the food was served, it was not even properly cooked!

A fellow grill and steak lover invited our barkada to have dinner at Impressions restaurant the other night. It’s at Maxim’s Hotel, near Resorts World Manila. We were so excited about it because the cost is only P888 per person, and that is for unlimited order of grilled foods such as lamb, steak, French duck, praws, tuna, and salmon.

Waiting for our other friends at Impressions @ Maxims hotel
    Waiting for our other friends

The waitresses were pretty and polite. They had complementary bread and soup, which helped us like the restaurant at first.

Complementary bread at Impressions @ Maxims hotel served with butter

There were white bread, walnut bread, and what we think was whole wheat bread. They’re warm and chewy, served with butter. I love bread and butter! I liked Impressions’ breads so much that I was able to ignore the restaurant’s mosquitoes helping themselves on my blood that night. They were all feasting on my feet. Argh!

Bowls of pumpkin soup with bacon bits were served after. There were 3 of us enjoying the bread and soup while waiting for the rest of the gang. When they arrived, we asked for their pumpkin soup bowls to be served but that took a long while. Our barkada‘s conversations got us through the long wait just fine and our seafood platter and meat platter were served. Take note: when the first platter was served, we ordered another batch of those platters immediately because we realized the ones already served were not enough for our group. It took ages for Impressions to serve the new batch, but I’ll get to that later. I’ll comment on what their foods taste like first. :p

Seafood platter at Impressions @ Maxims hotel
Seafood platter at Impressions @ Maxims hotel. Some tuna slices were sour. We hope those are still good.

The prawns were delicious. The salmon was yummy too but I realized then that I personally prefer raw salmon over cooked. 😀 The tuna was a bit sour but we thought that might be because Impressions marinated it in vinegar or lemon juice before cooking.

Meat platter at Impressions @ Maxims hotel
Meat platter at Impressions @ Maxims hotel

The steak at Impressions was too salty while the lamb was very enjoyable when eaten with the mint jelly sauce. The mint jelly sauce’s flavoring is a bit sour, which played the role of pantanggal-umay in my mouth. It’s hard to find the French duck in the platter, but they tasted great! They were the ones sliced into small pieces.

My favorite grilled foods that night at Impressions were the French duck, the lamb with mint jelly, and the prawns.

    Prawns Impressions @ Maxims hotel
3 of our friends LOVE prawns so they ordered a new platter of it. It arrived much earlier than the 2nd batch of platters that we ordered waaay earlier.

So… I mentioned that we ordered the next batch of platters right after the first batch was served. We sat there at the table at Impressions for about an hour waiting for that second batch. Impressions call this “unlimited servings” of various grilled foods but it seemed to me like they were stalling the serving of foods on purpose so that they would not run out of food supply.

Almost an hour of wait until they serve the 2nd batch of grilled food at Impressions @ Maxims hotel
Our lonely dining table at Impressions at Maxims Hotel. It’s almost an hour of wait plus several follow-ups until they served the 2nd batch of grilled foods. Akala namin unlimited grill ito? :p

There’s no more photos of the dining area after that because I was no longer in a good mood. I ordered a glass of lemon iced tea and that took a long while plus follow-ups to be served too. 🙁

After a decade, the second batch of grilled platter was finally served by Impressions but to our dismay, the steak that we ordered medium-rare was rare and very hard to chew. Of course, we requested that they send it back to the kitchen and have it cooked longer but it was so frustrating because we waited so long for that, only to find that it’s undercooked.

Obviously, I’m not coming back to Impressions at Maxims Hotel anytime soon. When I dine at restaurants, especially when considered “fine dining” restaurants, I expect to enjoy the ambience and get good service so I can relax, instead of getting stressed out waiting for almost an hour for food that they label as “unlimited”.

This Facebook post from Impressions says “Delight in unlimited servings of grilled lamb chop, rib eye, duck breast, salmon, tuna, prawns and more with Impressions’ Grill All You Can!”

Impressions should stop calling it unlimited when they just plan to stall the servings of food on purpose.

  • Patch Cafe: a place I’ll surely visit again in Baguio for yummy food and drinks

Patch Cafe: a place I’ll surely visit again in Baguio for yummy food and drinks

Next time we visit Baguio, I’d like to eat a meal and dessert at Patch Cafe again! And possibly stay at Bloomfield Hotel, since that’s where Patch Cafe is. 😆

Our third day in Baguio last long weekend was our last day. We weren’t sad to be going soon because we were already satisfied in our adventures.

Burnham Park strolling in the morning before lunch at Patch Cafe

Before heading to Patch Cafe for lunch, we visited Burnham Park first.

I was so happy to see flowers blooming all around Burnham Park on that Baguio visit. Both my companion and I were happy to watch a samoyed and a golden retriever pass by too. We were too shy to approach the owner to ask if we could pet them though. 😆 A few years ago, we visited in August and Burnham Park barely had any flower. Actually, we wouldn’t have planned to visit Burnham Park if I hadn’t seen a friend’s Instagram post of the park with lots of flowers! 😆

Our satisfying lunch and dessert at Patch Cafe in Baguio

    Patch Cafe’s ambience

    Look at Patch Cafe’s interior:

I liked this kind of ambience. To me, this kind of interior arrangement made me feel like I’m in a cozy house with lots of comfort food waiting for me. 😀 Two other tables were occupied near ours, and I noticed that they’re tables full of Asian foreigners. One table seated several Koreans and 2 locals, the other seated another group of foreigners who I’m not sure if Chinese, Thai or Vietnamese — definitely not Japanese or Koreans. 🙂

    Food at Patch Cafe, Baguio

We had chili tuyo pasta and buffalo wings plus banana cookie shake. Then later, for dessert we had chocolate praline and tiramisu cupcake. Also iced latte and brewed coffee.

    Our lunch at Patch Cafe

patch cafe (baguio) tuyo pasta, buffalo wings, banana cookie shake
Buffalo wings with blue cheese dip and battered fries, chili tuyo pasta, and banana cookie milkshake at Patch Cafe, Baguio.

banana cookie shake at patch cafe

I had been craving for some creamy banana dessert for days, and at first sight of “Banana Cookie Milkshake” I ordered it right away (like dessert round 1, lol). No regrets! It’s very creamy with that delicious flavor from the banana. The cookie on top was so yummy — crunchy with tasty chocolate chunks. <3 I know the caramel sauce that’s dripping all over the glass is supposed to make the milkshake more yummy, but it made my hand so sticky when I held the glass. I guess one should use napkin when holding such that. xD

    chili tuyo pasta

We loved the chili tuyo pasta! Very flavorful, according to my companion. The shredded tuyo is where most of its flavor came from. This tuyo pasta is oil-based, with just a hint of sourness, probably from calamansi. There’s a slice of half a calamansi on the chili tuyo pasta’s plate, in case you want your pasta more sour.

    buffalo wings, patch cafe

Buffalo wings from Patch Cafe in Baguio was only slightly spicy and not sour. The flavor was on spot on for what we’re looking for in buffalo wings. 😀 Blue cheese was easy to take out of the blue cheese dip, which was good cos we don’t like blue cheese but like the white dip itself. The fries were battered and crispy which we also liked. These thinly battered fries reminded me of similar fries that I tried at Baguio Craft Brewery. So is thinly battered fries a thing in Baguio or something? 😆 I like it.

    Our dessert at Patch Cafe

    20161031_140615

Patch Cafe’s desserts are of good quality and they are very affordable.

    patch cafe baguio dessert
Iced latte, brewed coffee, tiramisu cupcake, and chocolate praline (Patch Cafe, Baguio)
patch cafe baguio dessert cupcakes tiramisu
Hehe. I think the cupcake matches my shirt! And you know what, looking at the colorful plates and cups of somehow Patch Cafe puts me in a better mood. 😀

Let me start with the drinks we ordered for dessert time:

    20161031_140542

This is iced latte, which my companion called “perfect”. The blend of flavors was perfect that we didn’t add sweetener to it.

    20161031_140551

And this is brewed coffee and it’s really good. The taste reminded us of Dunkin’ Donuts’ brewed coffee, which is our favorite brewed coffee in Manila.

    20161031_140533

This dessert called “chocolate praline” was very interesting.

    20161031_140739

The texture is weird on first bite, but that’s because it’s an uncommon item in dessert stores. The coating was like chocolate ganache that is a bit gelatiney in texture. Inside it is like dark chocolate mousse and hazelnut praline. I’m not sure, but there could also be some sort of wafer layer inside. I loved it too! If I had the chance I would buy a chocolate praline again at Patch Cafe in Baguio. 🙂

tiramisu cupcake at patcha cafe, baguio

    Tiramisu cupcake was nice.

tiramisu cupcake at patcha cafe, baguio

Its cake part is basic vanilla cupcake. My companion didn’t like it because to him, it’s not moist. To me it’s not a problem. I know it’s not easy to make moist vanilla cupcakes. 😆 The center and bottom is soaked in coffee syrup. The tiramisu cupcake is topped with fluffy cream cheese frosting.

This is the kind of cupcake that is good quality to me. Larcy’s Cupcakery also makes good quality cupcakes. On a side note, I really don’t know why some people go crazy over Cupcakes by Sonja — their cupcakes are too expensive for the quality (frosting is either too greasy or too gritty with powdered sugar).

I loved everything I tried at Patch Cafe in Baguio! <3

So yeah, like I said, I definitely want to try other items at Patch Cafe when I go back to Baguio someday. From ambience to food quality, Patch Cafe is a comforting place to go in Baguio.

chocolate chip cookies (patch cafe, baguio)
I even ordered some of those chocolate chip cookies for take-out. Hihi

    20161031_171017

These cookies were crunchy, but still a bit moist inside. And I really liked the choco chips they used. OMNOMNOMNOM~

  • Lazy Bastard: try it for beefy burgers and customized breakfast sandwiches

Lazy Bastard: try it for beefy burgers and customized breakfast sandwiches

We decided to walk along Jupiter Street with our Pokemon Go apps turned on, hoping to add a couple of kilometers to our incubated Pokemon eggs.

    lazy bastard, makati

Our tired feet brought us to Lazy Bastard. It’s at Jupiter street corner Galaxy street.

lazy bastard, jupiter street corner galaxy street
Entrance to Lazy Bastard in Jupiter St. corner Galaxy St.

We already ordered cheeseburger and slappy joe when we noticed their breakfast sandwiches can be customized. I want to try hashbrowns instead of bread buns (they call this “outsides”)  and sausage patty with bacon and cheese as filling (they call these “insides”). Hehe. 😆 Or maybe waffle outside, with sausage, hashbrown, bacon and cheese inside… Served with vanilla milkshake! The latter sounds less nakakaumay. Too much oil, I know. Their menu even detailed the steps for their breakfast sandwiches:

    Step 1: Choose outsides
Step 2: Choose a lot of insides
    Step 3: Die Happy

I definitely want to take step 3 by being happy but without dying yet though. XD

After a few minutes, our burgers were served!

    20161112_115328
The sloppy joe was too sweet. To me, it would probably be enjoyable if the sweetness was just subtle. Lazy Bastad’s sloppy joe is even sweeter than the average beef tapa, and almost as sweet as tocino. 🙁

    cheese burger at lazy bastard
Cheese Burger from Lazy Bastard is very good, and I think it’s because I loved the melted cheddar cheese that they used. The burger patty itself is very beefy. I loved it!

    lazy bastard, jupiter street, makati

We ordered these burgers as part of combo meals for additional P90 on each meal. We had tots (they’re like hashbrowns shaped like small cylinders) and onion rings. The onion rings are onion slices fried with batter. My companion said it’s like tempura batter. The sides were served in paper bags, but we poured them on our plate for better presentation. Tee-hee.

    "Calamantea" at Lazy Bastard
    “Calamantea” at Lazy Bastard

Their calamantea (calamansi iced tea) is refreshing and goes well with their burgers (or any greasy food) because it lessens the umay feeling. It’s a must-try!

I will go back to munch on something again at Lazy Bastard when I have the chance, but will never try their Sloppy Joe again. Sorry but it was horrible because of the level of sweetness.

Go to Lazy Bastard if you want meaty, beefy beef patties and cheddar cheese on your cheeseburger, or if you want breakfast sandwich with waffles outside, and a high stack of sausage patty, bacon, cheese, eggs, and whatnot as filling! 😆 Die happy.

  • A nice Filipino lunch with dessert at “Green Pepper” in Ketchup Food Community

On our second day in Baguio last long weekend, we went sight-seeing at Mines View and Wright Park. After enjoying the views, our feet brought us [with growling stomachs] to Ketchup Food Community. We wanted to try Canto but were not willing to fall in the looong line of people waiting to be seated. We took a peek at the menu of the other restaurants there, and decided to eat at Green Pepper because we were interested in trying their Kiniing Chicken.

I know I said in my previous post about Microtel by Wyndham – Baguio that I prefer other cuisines while traveling because I already eat Filipino food everyday at home, but we were really interested in the “kiniing” dishes at Green Pepper. I also wanted warm soup like sinigang that time because my throat felt sore, and my lungs had an uncomfortable feeling. (My nasal allergy was triggered while strolling near the body of water surrounded by flowers near The Mansion in/near Wright Park).

Mines View sight-seeing before dining at “Green Pepper”

At Mines View, we just took a quick stroll around the area with lots of tourists with a nice view. Then we had a picture taken with a beautiful St. Bernard dog named “Sky”. We also had some sweet, warm strawberry taho before leaving the Mines View area.

Pasalubong shopping at Good Shepherd–Mountain Maid Training Center

We don’t have a car so we don’t buy boxes of Mountain Maid products. xD

There, I posted a receipt with some item and prices just for reference 🙂

Strolling at Wright Park and The Mansion before having lunch at “Green Pepper”

Wright Park is the place to go if you want to do horse-riding in Baguio. We also climbed that high stairway. I hated it! 😆 Not because of my low stamina, but because I was scared of making a wrong step on the narrow and uneven steps. I’m a klutz. 🙁

We took another way to go down. hehe. I’m lucky that that stairway wasn’t the only way down. :3

All the strolling made us hungry and we headed to Ketchup Food Community. The menu at Canto seemed interesting but there’s a long line of people waiting to be seated. We were starved and tired, and were not willing to fall in line there.

We chose to eat at Green Pepper instead, since we wanted to try the kiniing meats.

Lunch time at “Green Pepper” at Ketchup food community

"Green Pepper" lunch at Ketchup Food Community
The view beside our table at “Green Pepper”, overlooking other establishments in Ketchup Food Community

    This was our lunch:

"Green Pepper" lunch at Ketchup Food Community
Kiniing pork sinigang, kiniing chicken, rice, and lemon-cucumber drink

A closer look at the kiniing pork sinigang:

"Green Pepper" lunch at Ketchup Food Community

“Kiniing is one way of preserving meat of cow, carabao or pig, usually the lean part in the northern part of the Philippines. ” – Source: https://pinayinsideout.blogspot.com/2015/10/kiniing-as-way-of-preserving-food.html

Green Pepper’s Kiniing Pork Sinigang is sinigang with the usual vegetables in it, plus grilled kiniing (preserved) pork. We really enjoyed this dish, because it’s like delicious pork sinigang but even better, having that extra smokey flavor from the kiniing.

And here’s the interesting chicken dish:

"Green Pepper" lunch at Ketchup Food Community
“Smoked chicken simmered in ginger broth and served with peppered strawberry glaze”

We ordered this kiniing chicken dish because it was not something we’d easily find in Metro Manila. Kakaiba e. Besides, it has strawberry glaze. I like strawberries, and I tend to crave many strawberry-flavored things when in Baguio.

So, was the kiniing chicken with strawberry glaze very good? Mmmm I’ll be honest. I didn’t like it that much. The chicken meat was dry and tough — okay, it may be because it’s all breast part, but I often get moist breast part of grilled chicken from Andoks!

The strawberry glaze didn’t taste that good, until I actually get some of those few small strawberry bits and mix it into my spoonfool of chicken, glaze and rice.

I also wish they could brown the chicken skin by grilling it. Look how pale it is.

So yeah, sorry but I didn’t like the kiniing chicken that much. It’s not a horrible dish, it was alright. It’s just that I expected it to be better than that. But hey, remember that we all have different preferences in food. 🙂

"Green Pepper" lunch at Ketchup Food Community

The lemon-cucumber drink was not that enjoyable until we added ice in it. Why? Because it’s not cold enough, and the flavors are too concentrated (too sweet!). A Green Pepper staff gave us a pitcher of ice. We put a good amount into the drink and once chilled and watered down, we really did enjoy the refreshing combination of citrus and cucumber flavors.

Dessert at “Green Pepper” in Ketchup Food Community

"Green Pepper" lunch at Ketchup Food Community

The nasal allergy attack earlier that day drained a lot of energy in me and so I told my companion I want to have coffee and sweets. We ordered chocolate cake and brewed coffee. If I remember correctly, we really wanted apple pie but it wasn’t available. 🙁

"Green Pepper" lunch at Ketchup Food Community
“Chocolate Indulgence: A slice of moist chocolate cake, salty caramel and rich fudge frosting”

Green Pepper’s chocolate cake was made of dense but nicely moist chocolate cake layers, with caramel filling, and coated in choco fudge/ganache. I could not taste the caramel, but it’s no big deal. It still was a nice chocolatey dessert.

The brewed coffee had a faint flavor of hazelnut. This reminded me of the hazelnut-flavored coffee that I bought from Bag of Beans, Tagaytay a few years ago.

    Conclusion

    Next time we’ll definitely try Canto at Ketchup Food Community! ^_^;

  • Another dinner at Glenn 50’s Diner

Another dinner at Glenn 50’s Diner

2 years ago I had my first dinner at Glenn 50’s Diner. I ordered fried chicken, expecting it to be just enough amount for 1 person, but they served me 3 huge pieces of chicken. Sulit, right? Their foods are also delicious, and having their ice cream milkshake with your meal is mandatory. :3

This year, we had another dinner at Glenn 50’s Diner. We came a bit early for dinner, around 6:30PM, and yet, there was still a waiting list. How can Glenn 50’s Diner not be that popular with the low prices and good quality, right?

“You and I” meal at Glenn 50’s Diner

    you and i - glenn 50's diner
“Deep fried breaded ground beef and ground chicken, topped with tartar sauce and mayo sauce ala croquet.”

I really liked the breaded ground beef with chili con carne on top. It’s extra tasty because theres’s beans in the chili con carne. The ground chicken one was not as good as the beef, but it’s still good.

Glenn 50’s diner did not mention the chili con carne on their description of this product though.

“Gambler’s Choice” meal at Glenn 50’s Diner

    gambler's choice - glenn 50's diner
“Hustler favorite, marinated pork spareribs, then grilled until golden brown topped with our special white sauce and 3 pcs. of grilled shrimps in BBQ sauce, sauteed vegetables lying on a bed of rice.”

Gambler’s Choice was pork ribs, served sliced and without bones. Glenn 50’s Diner’s menu description says that the pork should be topped with special white sauce, but the sauce is only drizzled like decoration and I could barely taste it.

On my first piece of pork spareribs, I loved it because the meat was so tender! But the next pieces I ate were not as good as the first. My companion said the pork spareribs of Glenn 50’s Diner tasted like adobo.

Also take note that the BBQ sauce are on the shell of the shrimps. I don’t like eating the shell of shrimps like some people enjoy doing, but I still ate it. Sayang yung BBQ sauce e! 😆

Okay, the photo below has poor quality. I used the front camera of my phone for that. hehe.

    20161029_181743

As always, their ice cream shakes are yummy! We ordered vanilla and strawberry ice cream shakes this time. I loved both of them. <3

    Happy companion is happy!
    Happy companion is happy!

I wasn’t able to take a photo of it, but we ordered their 100-peso burger for take out, which came with fries. They also included mustard and ketchup in the take-out box. Hmmm I think the fries from Glenn 50’s Diner was the only fries we tried on our Baguio trip without batter. Still delicious though! The burger tasted alright.

Glenn 50’s Diner shall remain as one of my favorite places in Baguio. <3

  • “Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe” lunch after Camp John Hay strolling in Baguio

“Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe” lunch after Camp John Hay strolling in Baguio

On our first day in Baguio on a recent long weekend, we went strolling at Camp John Hay. After the tiring walk, we helped ourselves to a brunch at Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe.

Before I talk about the food at Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe, let me share some Camp John Hay photos first:

    camp john hay baguio

We went to Mile High, an area with lots of ukay/tiangge, and also went for a short trip at The Manor and its garden.

The Manor garden was where we sat on a bench to catch our breath and enjoy the view. We felt hunger coming and decided to try Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe, which was one of the shops below Camp John Hay that we found online. Thank you, Globe for good mobile Internet!

When we arrived at Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe, we were seated right away by an attendant. It took long for someone to give us a food menu though, and we had to request it, otherwise, I think it could have taken 30 minutes for them to notice that we didn’t have their menu. Almost all tables were occupied that time.

We ordered brewed coffee and Cappuccino for our brunch, longganisa omelette with toast, and beef tapa with sunny side up egg and red rice. They only serve red rice, and have no plain rice. I realized that red rice actually looks violet. 😆

    20161029_084839

Our coffee was starting to get cold and yet our foods hadn’t been served yet. They were delicious foods though! I noticed that there were only 2 staffs going around the shop to tend to customers. I know it must be a tough job. I myself won’t be able to do that kind of work. Kudos!

longganisa omelette with toast at Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe

This was the omelette we ordered. It was served with toast, butter, and strawberry jam! Yay, I love butter on my toast. 🙂 And wow, strawberry jam makes me happier because I felt the “Baguio vibes” even more. Tee-hee. The omelette was very tasty, and I liked the parts with longganisa. The omelette also had bell peppers, onions, olives, and mushrooms. Okay, I must confess. I personally didn’t like it because even though I like the flavor they give, I don’t like munching on onions, bell pepper, and olives. 😆 It’s my fault for ordering this item without considering the ingredients.

Beef tapa, sunny side up egg, and red rice at Everything Nice Cake Shop and Cafe

And here’s beef tapa with sunny side up egg plus red rice. It’s nothing special but was truly enjoyable. The beef was tender, the egg yolk was runny just the way we like it, and the red rice was just fine.

They had cakes and other baked goods too. I would try those if I wasn’t full yet. 😆

  • Our Stay at Microtel by Wyndham – Baguio

Our Stay at Microtel by Wyndham – Baguio

Baguio is one of the places that me and a certain companion enjoy visiting. The cold climate and the closeness to nature help us relax. During our recent trip, we decided to stay at Microtel, major reasons being its location — very close to Victory Liner terminal, and its breakfast buffet.

We arrived early on October 29, around 8AM. There was still no available room for early check-in, and the receptionist told us that they would send us an SMS as soon as a room becomes available. She also told us that we could help ourselves with free instant coffee at the lobby, and showed us the way to the comfort room.

    20161029_055411

There was a water dispenser at the lobby, free to use by all guests, and we thought that was nice because the common complementary 1-bottled-water-per-guest-per-day is never enough for us.

    Our room at Microtel Baguio

Around 11:30AM, they texted me, informing us that there’s already a room that’s ready for check-in. Hurray! We got room 310, right in front of the elevator. To our surprise (and joy) there’s a water dispenser right beside our room. Thanks for the free drinking water, Microtel! We really appreciate that. 🙂 It’s very convenient.

Our room was facing a more peaceful street, and not the Victory Liner bus terminal, and so no traffic noises bothered us during our stay. I expected noise from other guests though because our room was right in front of the elevator. Every guest on the floor would pass our door.

The Microtel room had everything we need: hair dryer, towels (bath towel, face towel, hand towel — more than we need!), toothbrush, shampoo, soap, TV, closet with light bulb inside. There’s a narrow but long couch by the window, which I think could be a good spot for an extra guest to sleep in. The lights of the room were yellow which may look nice, but I always prefer bright white lights because I see my things better with it.

I noticed that every time we come in to the Microtel room, there’s a heavy amount of dust suspended in the air. I’m not sure if it’s normal for any room or not but I don’t notice it in other rooms (other rooms being my room and other hotel rooms I’ve been to). I had many nasal allergy attacks during our stay in Baguio, particularly in the garden near The Mansion, and during my sleep on the first night at Microtel.

The free WiFi at Microtel Baguio is reliable. The signal is good at our room, and the speed is good (at least to me, who is used to very slow Internet connection in my home and office, huhu). In my home and office, 360p YouTube videos would load slowly, but I was able to enjoy 480p YouTube videos in Microtel Baguio.

There were numerous “Under Renovation” signs in Microtel Baguio hallways but we never heard any construction noises. Noisy kids in the hallway before 7AM woke us up though, with their loud footsteps and loud high-pitched voice. I hate it when that happens. We were set to wake up much later that morning. People can have different bed time and waking time, right? It would be really awesome if Microtel (and other hotels) implemented better soundproofing on their rooms so that unruly kids [and adults] would not bother tired guests who need to sleep.

    Breakfast buffet at Microtel Baguio

    Day 1

    microtel-breakfast-buffet
First day breakfast buffet at Microtel Baguio. This photo looks lonely. hehe. I forgot to take more photos because I was starved!

The breakfast buffet of Microtel Baguio was at Te Quiero. At 9AM they ran out of taho. 🙁 They only serve that on Sundays and Wednesdays. They also ran out of toast and no longer refilled at 9AM. The breakfast buffet is available 6:30AM to 10AM, by the way. There’s unlimited brewed coffee and Milo. The foods? Hmm, nothing special to me, but buffet is better than the usual free Filipino breakfast in other hotels. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t like Filipino food. It’s just that I am already eating Filipino food everyday at home, so it’s really nice to taste different cuisines when on a vacation.

They served mushroom soup (too thick with cornstarch flour to me, and the flavor came mostly from saltiness), toast (but like I said, they ran out when we came to eat) with spreads and butter, danggit (salty and yummy), ginisang pechay, pininyahang manok, and corned beef. There’s a counter where a staff would cook eggs for you – sunny side up or omelettes. Then there’s a table with unsweetened corn flakes and chocolate cereals that you can enjoy with milk. On the same table are fresh fruits and vegetable salad. There’s chocolate cherry pudding served in spoons. It’s too sweet even for a person with sweet tooth like me.

    Day 2

2nd day breakfast buffet at Microtel Baguio
2nd day breakfast buffet at Microtel Baguio

We went to Te Quiero for breakfast buffet earlier on our second day, this time at 7:15AM. There were even more people having breakfast that time! There’s corned beef hash (probably made of leftover corned beef from yesterday but this is much better!), fried rice, plain rice, creamy and slightly sweet carrot soup (much better than mushroom soup), ginisang sayote, fried fish, Italian sausage (better with toast than rice), tocino (not too sweet and with nice smoked flavor), and as usual, the cereals, fruits and vegetable salad. This time we were able to enjoy some toasted bread with butter <3

Will I go back to Microtel Baguio?

Yes! Especially if they could soundproof the room doors. 😆

Interesting dishes at “Your Local” in Legazpi Village, Makati (review)

Friend: “is your office close to your local?”
    Me: “close to… my local?”
Friend: “no, the place’s name is ‘your local’!”
    Me: “ohh!”

I searched for the place Your Local and found our that it’s a restaurant in Esteban St. in Makati’s Legazpi Village. They had interesting dishes like laksa fettuccine, torched salmon donburi, and beef rendang buns.

Their drinks and dessert also sounded interesting, like Arnie Palmer (earl grey iced tea with lemon grass and orange) and chocolate earl grey pudding and lime mousse.

We sat in the bar area, where we could see food preparation. I enjoyed watching them enjoying themselves prepare food.

😀 I’ll probably look like them when I open a dessert shop one day. 😆 It seemed like the salmon donburi and the black-bun burger are one of their best sellers. It was so cool watching a lady set the dish “torched salmon donburi” on fire. hehe. For several times I had seen them prepare a burger with black buns. I’d like to try that next time.

I like trying new dishes and enjoyed what I tried at Your Local in Legazpi Village, Makati.

Parmesan Fries with Truffle Ketchup at Your Local

    parmesan-fries-truffle-ketchup-your-local

My friend and I tried parmesan fries with truffle ketchup, torched salmon donburi, and lamb rendang. The fries smelled like bonito. I think the fries weren’t seasoned with salt because they are bland by themselves, but get tasty when you dip them into the ketchup. I liked how crispy the fries were too.

I don’t know what truffle flavor tastes/smells like, so I can’t tell if the ketchup had a “truffle-y” flavor. It actually doesn’t taste different from tomato ketchup.

Torched Salmon Donburi at Your Local

The salmon donburi was delicious too, served with black rice. The salmon was soft, moist and tasty, and I liked the rich mayo on it.

We need more rice with this!

    Lamb Rendang at Your Local

Oh, the lamb rendang — I liked how the meat was shredded. Everything else on the plate went well with it: mint sauce, raisins, cucumber, and black rice. The only think that could improve the dishes is… more rice! XD I felt that the salmon and rendang were very tasty (and tasty usually needs more rice), but they seem to skimp on the amount of rice they serve with the dishes.

The torched salmon donburi needed more rice, but this lamb rendang was tastier that it needed much more rice with it. Your Local, please don’t skimp on rice. The dishes are not cheap anyway. 😆

Service? The staff who waited tables were laid back and easy to talk to, but they seemed to be in a hurry to clear tables. Someone asked if he may take the plate of a dish we finished and we said yes, but to our surprise, he also took our plate of salmon that we still wanted to finish. My friend and I were distracted in our convo that we only noticed that he also took out plate of salmon when he was already walking away… a moment when it’s awkward to say “ay kuya kakainin pa po namin yan!” ??? That salmon was not cheap. HUHU

Mob Psycho 100 anime episode 2 review (SPOILER ALERT)

I watched the second episode of Mob Psycho 100 last night and though I said in my episode 1 reaction that I found the manga chapters 1 and 2 were funnier than anime’s episode 1, I liked the anime’s episode 2 better than manga chapters 3 and 4. Mob Psycho 100 episode 2 featured funny scenes that were either not in the manga (or did I just forget them? hope not),  or not as well-presented in the manga.

Oh look, it’s a reference to the One-Punch Man manga:

It seems that Reigen has more talent in other fields than being a psychic. He should be massage therapist instead. 😆

NOOOOOOO– close your eyes and scroll past the next photo!

Haha. What a smooth fraud! His massage skills saved him.

“One” really likes this kind of cleft chin. 😆

Tome Kurata, president of Telepathy Club, trying to be cute with a cutesy pose. This is one of the scenes that is funnier in the anime than manga.

Reigen vs. Kurata over the phone 😆 I liked the execution of this scene.

So Kurata has an idea how Reigen is a fake psychic and is only using Mob. 😆 While Reigen has an idea how the Telepathy Club only needs the club room and club budget so they could stay in the room while playing cards and eating snacks.

The second half of Mob Psyscho 100 episode 2 shows us Reigen and Mob dressed as school girls. 😆 I don’t remember seeing this in the first four chapters of the manga. I liked how female Reigen acted and spoke. xD He looked like he could pass as a tall school girl.

…not! Ugh. He planned everything so that only Mob would get into the school to exorcise the spirit.

This episode actually made me think about my own life 🙁 If I were still in middle school like Mob, I would choose to be a programmer and start my career much earlier than I actually did.

Mob in the bath tub: if this were One-Punch Man, there would be bubble popping from the bath water. lol.

All for his crush Takane Tsubomi, who likes athletic guys. Awww.

Tsubomi in manga looks so different from Tsubomi in manga. LOL. I think that I was cracking up at the manga chapters 1 and 2 because of the art style. The characters’ faces look funny in the manga. 😆

  • Mob Psycho 100 anime episode 1 review (SPOILER ALERT)

Mob Psycho 100 anime episode 1 review (SPOILER ALERT)

My office friends are watching Mob Psycho 100, an anime series that just started airing last week. It’s from the same creator of One-Punch Man, who is called One.

    Mob Psycho 100 anime introduction

I read chapter 1 of the Mob Psycho 100 manga after watching episode 1 of the anime, and honestly, the manga made me laugh more than the anime. Probably because of the drawing style — they look funnier in the manga. 😆

In Mob Psycho 100 episode 1, the anime introduced notable characters such as Reigen the fake psychic and Shigeo, the main character who we are calling “Mob”.

I wonder how he got the nickname Mob.

Episode 1 also showed us a man with large cleft chin that looked like a butt, and I started cracking up with mild cursing when I saw that! “One” really likes that kind of chin, huh? 😆 I could only imagine that the “kid with large chin” in One-Punch Man had grown up to be that guy in Mob Psycho 100.

Anyway, that kid Mob, with his passive carefree attitude and constantly bored facial expression reminds me so much of Saitama from One-Punch Man. My friends think it’s a good thing but I’m torn like, haha he reminds me so much of that funny guy Saitama, while thinking, can’t One create a more unique main character?

This scene made me chuckle when Reigen was like “Hey come here Mob, the client and the evil spirit that we need to exorcise are waiting” combined with the chill look on the spirit while waiting. 😆

Hehe, the thug ghost in the second part of Mob Psycho episode 1 turned into a cute li’l blue ghost with a mustache and high-pitched voice.

I must also say I dislike how Reigen’s personality. Yeah, I know, I know. Reigen being a fraud is supposed to be funny and I do find him funny, but at the same time I don’t like him. Maybe because I have seen [and hated] people in real life getting all the credit when they are not really the ones who do the amazing job. And the ending, when Reigen treats Mob to ramen and told him he may only order up to two add-on chashu pork, while Reigen had so many add-ons to his ramen. I felt bad for Mob during that scene. Yeah maybe this is just me taking things too seriously again. :p

Well, I will surely watch Mob Psycho 100 up to the last episode and will try to keep reading the manga. 🙂
