I’ve been so “heads down” at my Android App Dev job in the past few years that I didn’t know what’s going on in the SEO scene anymore.
Today I learned that SEO is not all there is anymore. Well, I knew something was off because my blog traffic dropped significantly in the past couple of years, in time with the introduction of AI Overview when one searches for something on Google. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a specific concept I learned about today. The way I understand it, it’s optimizing your web pages not for search engine, but for AI (the “generative engine”).
I picked 1 popular (relatively) blog post and optimized its structure for GEO:
- Added an <h2> tag “Quick Guide Summary” to a popular post
- Converted the entire WordPress post content into “block” format (it’s a very old blog post!)
- Converted list items that were only pieced together by asterisks (*) preceding each line, into semantic HTML lists
- Wrapped important texts in <strong> tags, optimizing them for both human and AI readers
- Added a FAQ at the bottom of the post to help AI find answers easier on my blog post
Non-GEO specific: Added navigation “helpers” to the loooong blog post, such as jump-to-top and jump-to-section links/buttons.
Not sure yet how this will affect the blog post. I’m still re-learning the ropes here. GEO, huh? Interesting..
