  • Tuna Patties: recipe for low carb diet

THIS is probably the best so far low carb recipe that I’ve tried!

These tuna patties are very tasty and satisfying, and you don’t even have to buy fresh tuna fish. They taste amazing even with canned tuna. Tastes

    Ingredients:

    425 grams canned tuna, drained
    3 beaten eggs
    1/4 cup red onion, minced
18 pcs pork rinds (chicharon), crushed
    4 cloves garlic, minced
Italian seasoning (or combine dried rosemary, basil, oregano)
    red pepper flakes (optional)
    salt and pepper to taste
    Oil for frying

    Procedures:

    1. Drain tuna completely then place it in a big bowl
    2. Add to tuna: onion, pork rind, eggs, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, plus an amount salt and pepper that you think will suffice
    3. Mix well and refrigerate for 30 minutes
    4. Shape the mixture into 8 patties. It’s easier to just use your clean hands
    5. Caution: oil splatters when you fry these so be careful!
    6. Heat up the oil in a large pan then fry each side of tuna patty for 3-4 minutes per side
    7. Make sure to brown each side nicely, but not blacken it. The browning gives a nice crunch, and the crunch is what makes these patties really delicious.

These tuna patties are very low in carb, very tasty that they’re not like food for a diet, and very simple to make… and so I’m surely gonna make these again!

Recipe adapted from Tuna Cakes recipe from Butter is not a Carb.

I’ll surely try this too: Mini Tuna Melt

  • Cheesy Mashed Cauliflower: recipe for low carb diet

This is a low carb version of mashed potato. I adapted the “Better than Potatoes” Cheesy Cauliflower Puree recipe from ibreatheimhungry.com.

    Ingredients:
1 head cauliflower (mine weighed 192 grams after cleaning and trimming)
3 Tbsp heavy cream (I used Anchor brand)
    28 grams butter
    1.5 oz cheddar cheese
    salt and pepper to taste

    Procedures:
Clean and trim cauliflower. Break into small pieces.
Microwave it with cream and butter for 3 minutes then toss ingredients to coat cauliflower with liquid.
Continue heating in microwave for another 3 minutes.
Add cheddar cheese then microwave for 1 minute.
Quickly transfer to blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.
Microwave for 1 minute, add salt and pepper to taste, then mix well.
Store in sealed container for up to 3 days in the fridge.

The mashed cauliflower’s aroma can take some getting used to. I think I won’t be able to eat it without the cream and cheese mixed in. xD I think the carb content is not that low, (I try to target 20 grams of carbs per day, tops) that’s why I don’t want to make it often.

  • Android: 2-dimensional List String (List of List)

For a web developer who used mostly PHP and JavaScript for several years, plunging into Java can be challenging especially when it comes to data types.

PHP and JavaScript are loosely typed languages, while Java is strict about types.

I was told that in Android, List<String> is very commonly used, even more than arrays. And now I’ve come to the point when I need to use a 2-dimensional List<String>.

    Here’s a sample code:

    Output of System.outprintln(Arrays.deepToString(ls.toArray())); is this:

The output of Log.d("serialized", listOfList.toString()); is this:

Shinjuku Ramen House review – Little Tokyo, Makati

A friend and I wanted Japanese food a few days ago, and because she wanted ramen while I wanted sashimi, our feet took us to Shinjuku Ramen House, which had both items available on their menu. It’s along Chino Roces Avenue, and if I remember correctly, is located at the intersection with Fernando Street.

     shinjuku ramen house review

There were only a couple of tables occupied when we came to Shinjuku around 6PM.

We ordered sashimi mix, hirekatsu, and shoyu ramen. I wanted to drink one bottle of beer because I miss the taste of it (I drink just to savor the taste of beer with food) — but it was kinda hot where we were seated. We were sitting on the table with couches, near the entrance. I opted for cold house tea instead and that helped me cool down. Geez, it’s hot in our country even in November! 😳

Sashimi mix at Shinjuku Ramen House

sashimi mix at shinjuku makati 3

They served sashimi mix first, which we liked because it’s a good appetizer for us.

It had 3 slices of cooked unagi (freshwater eel), 1 cooked shrimp, 1 crab stick sliced into 2, 3 thin slices of tamagoyaki (omelette), 4 small raw salmon slices, and 4 small raw tuna slices.

Take a closer look at the sashimi mix from Shinjuku Ramen House:

sashimi mix at shinjuku, close up, makati

Sashimi Mix at Shinjuku costs P410.

First, let me comment that their wasabi paste seemed to be on the dry side compared to other Japanese restaurants. But not as dry as the ones Tokyo Tokyo serves. 😆

And here’s what me and my friend thought of their sashimi: The unagi slices were just fine. A little bit too “malansa” (or, smells too fishy?) for my liking but that might be just how unagi really is. Nothing worth mentioning about the crab sticks, tamagoyaki and shrimp. Tuna and salmon were fresh just like what we’re used to at Izakaya Kikufuji, but the slices of sashimi at Shinjuku are too small.

Was it worth the money? No, I felt lugi with Shinjuku’s plate of mixed sashimi. The slices of fish, and actually, everything, were too small for P410. We’ll stick to the sashimi at Izakaya Kikufuji.

By the way, I think Shinjuku also has the maki that has raw fish and crunchy spicy breading on top… just like the one you’d find at Izakaya Kikufuji. Ginaya lang kaya? 😆

Okay, but let’s understand that RAMEN is Shinjuku’s specialty. Not sashimi.

    Hirekatsu at Shinjuku Ramen House

Hirekatsu, or hire-katsu, is pork fillet. Compared to rosu-katsu, hire-katsu is leaner but less tasty. Rosu-katsu has more fat than hire-katsu. It’s not uncommon for meat’s fat to improve the flavor of meat dishes.

    hirekatsu at shinjuku makati

This is served without rice so you need to order rice separately. Shredded cabbages drizzled with sesame dressing, and cucumber + tomato garnish are included in the plate. The tomato slices tasted funny while the cucumber slices were okay. This costs P350.

Shinjuku’s hirekatsu was enjoyable enough for me especially when I dip it in tonkatsu sauce. Without tonkatsu sauce, the hirekatsu was on the dry side. I think their hirekatsu could use some improvement. I’ve eaten juicier lean pork meats than Shinjuku’s hirekatsu.

Again, Shinjuku specializes on RAMEN, so…

Shoyu ramen at Shinjuku Ramen House

     shoyu ramen at shinjuku makati

Here’s the food that my friend was craving for — ramen! This is called shoyu ramen, and a small bowl of it costs P120. Shoyu means soy sauce.

Shinjuku’s shoyu ramen had noodles that had just the right softness. It’s not the chewy kind that some people like. It had half an egg, seaweed strips, mushrooms, pechay leaves, and slices of pork. It wasn’t bad, my friend said. But the soup was lacking saltiness to it. My friend said she had better bowls of ramen than what she had at Shinjuku Ramen House, with special mention to Ramen Santouka in Alabang Town Center.

Oops, it turns out even Shinjuku’s specialty couldn’t satisfy us. 😳 But I’m willing to come back to try another ramen flavor. Maybe shoyu ramen wasn’t one of their good ones. 😉

By the way, at around 7PM, more customers went in to eat at Shinjuku Ramen House, but there were still several vacant seats.

  • How to change app name in Android Studio

How to change app name in Android Studio

I’m trying to learn how to build a simple app in Android just to satisfy my curiosity. This will also be a very handy skill because I use Android phones often, and there are times that the apps I download from Google Play Store lack features that I need.

This will be a very simple guide on how to change app name in Android Studio, something that most beginners in Android development probably want to know.

It is assumed in this guide that you have prior knowledge in coding.

The app name that I’m referring to is the one that says “My Application”, as marked on the image below:

How to change app name in Android Studio

To change that, go to your Project and find the app folder. Under app, find AndroidManifest.xml and edit android:label="My Application", replacing “My Application” with the name you’d like to use.

    Refer to the image below:

    android-studio-android-manifest

Your changed app name should be reflected in the live preview now, if you have it activated. If you don’t have live preview yet, check this out: Where is Android Studio layout preview?

    Updates…

How to rename project folders of Android Studio

You may also want to change the name of your Android app’s folder. Check this folder, it’s probably where your Android project folder is located — C:\Users\catkeng\AndroidStudioProjects\

How to rename package in Android Studio

Right-click on your package name in the Project tree. It’s probably under app->java. Then choose “Refactor”, then choose “Rename”. Take note that you’ll see “Rename package” and “Rename folders” button here — you might need to go back to this screen later to click “Rename folders”. For now, click the “Rename package” button. Type the new name that you want to use, then click “Refactor”. If that hasn’t changed all package name instances for you, follow the same steps until you can click “Rename folders” button too. That should do it!

  • Rokka no Yuusha: Braves of the Six Flowers review

Rokka no Yuusha: Braves of the Six Flowers review

Rokka no Yuusha: Braves of the Six Flowers, as I type this, is the most recent anime series that I finished. When I watched the first episode, I thought it was a dull show about a typical adventure where heroes set out on a journey to defeat a demon. But the friend who gave me a copy of the Rokka no Yuusha episodes insisted that it was a good anime series, and so I tried to bear with it and watched a couple more episodes. And I did not regret doing so!

The mystery involved in this anime series was AWESOME, and I will leave it at that to avoid spoiling anyone in this Rokka no Yuusha review. :p

    Plot in Rokka no Yuusha

When the Demon God awakes from the depths of darkness, the Goddess of Fate selects six heroes and bequeaths them with the power to save the world. Adlet, a boy who proclaims himself the strongest man in the world, has been selected among “The Heroes of the Six Flowers”. However, as the heroes gather, they soon begin to suspect that someone amongst them is an imposter. Source: MyAnimeList.net

Since I don’t think this is a spoiler, and I think that you actually need to know it: Rokka no Yuusha doesn not focus on the Braves’ journey and their battle against the demon god. I was hesitant to watch the show at first because that was what I thought, and I was wrong. 😆 The plot in this series of 12 episodes revolves around the mystery of who might be the impostor within the group.

Art style in Rokka no Yuusha

The art in Rokka no Yuusha wasn’t bad. I have nothing much to say, aside from my relief to find that the characters do not look too young for their age, unlike in the anime series I watched right before Rokka no Yuusha (Chaos Dragon).

    Characters in Rokka no Yuusha

    adlet-rokka-no-yuusha

    Adlet

Adlet is the main character of Rokka no Yuusha. He may be an overconfident fighter, calling himself the strongest man in the world, but you can learn something from him: that smiling can help you get through your hardships.

    nachetania-rokka-no-yuusha

    Nachetania

Nachetania Loei Piena Augustra is the crown princess of Piena. From beginning to end, I did not like this character. Her outfit looks silly — bunny ears plus a revealing outfit. She’s sometimes an easygoing girl, and sometimes seems to lose her mind then becomes a scary, bitchy Saint of Blades.

    goldov-rokka-no-yuusha

    Goldov

Part of me dislikes Goldov for acting against someone because of his emotions, but can you really blame him? Jealousy is a strong emotion.

It’s easy to admire Goldov because of his loyalty to Nachetania and because of his strength in battle, though I’m in doubt if his outfit can really protect him from battles. 😆 He is clad in what seems to be heavy armor, but leaves his torso open in the front. Or am I missing any practical purpose for that opening in his torso?

    fremie-rokka-no-yuusha

    Fremie

Another character in Rokka no Yuusha with what I would call a “silly outfit”, Fremie wears an attire that is somewhat similar with Goldov’s, with an exposed front of the torso and only a narrow strip of clothing across the chest. But I dislike the fact that Fremie’s “narrow strip of clothing across the chest” barely covers up her breasts.

Ignoring Fremie’s outfit which can be uncomfortable to look at, her personality can be likable once you hear her story.

    hans-rokka-no-yuusha

    Hans

Nyaa! …is something you’d often hear from Hans. It was so annoying at first, combined with his seemingly dark character. But I got used to it especially when I learned that he’s imitating cats as respect. He looks more like a rat than a cat though. 😆

Hans is intelligent, as shown when the Braves were trying to figure out who the impostor was.

    maura-rokka-no-yuusha

    Maura

Maura is the Saint of Mountain and can get scary sometimes.

At some point in Rokka no Yuusha, Maura was the most suspicious character to me because of how determined she was to kill another Brave.

    chamot-rokka-no-yuusha

    Chamot

Chamot the Saint of the Swamp and is said to be one of the strongest fighters.

I think I hate Chamot more than Nachetania because this brat is really selfish and uncooperative without intervention from Maura. Ugh!

    Images taken from CrunchyRoll.com
Okay, so, I think I dislike a lot of things about the characters, from the way they dress to the way they act. 😆

Do I recommend Rokka no Yuusha: Braves of the Six Flowers?

YES! Especially if you love the thrill from mystery, go ahead and watch Rokka no Yuusha.

    Rokka no Yuusha Season 2?

There’s still no news as of now (Nov. 7, 2015) if there’s gonna be a season 2 for Rokka no Yuusha. Maybe it depends on the ratings/performance of this series. I do hope it gets season 2 though!

Makes me wonder… should they push through with Rokka no Yuusha season 2, will it finally focus on the battle with the demon? Or will it focus on another mystery before actually facing the demon? I think either way, it’s going to make us feel thrilled with another mystery! 🙂

S&R Pizzas for non-members are awesome! I especially enjoyed the foods at S&R Subic during a trip.

I first tried foods at the S&R branch Bradco Avenue, Baclaran before a flight with a companion who was an S&R member. I was told that only S&R members can dine in to try their Food Services, except for S&R Cubao branch. I was like, meh, I very rarely go to Cubao, too bad I won’t be able to eat at S&R as often as I want to because I’m not yet willing to apply for membership.

We had a short trip at Subic and ate lunch at S&R near Pure Gold before heading back to Manila.

Following is the S&R Subic Menu. To find out what I think about foods served at S&R Subic, scroll farther down the menu to find my S&R Subic Review.

I should have gotten closer to the counter to take better S&R menu photos but I guess I was too tired and the idea didn’t cross my mind. 😳 But here’s a text version of S&R Subic Menu:

This is Clam Chowder from S&R Subic. It’s a dream for people who love thick and creamy soup. The small chunks of potatoes make the soup feel even thicker. I prefer less potatoes though, because they kind of get in the way when I want to enjoy the creamy texture of the soup.

  • Catzie’s Creamy Carbonara Recipe

    Catzie’s Creamy Carbonara Recipe

When it comes to pasta dishes, I like it when the sauce is thick and really clings to the pasta. And when eating white sauce pasta, I want it really creamy.

I’ll share with you a creamy carbonara recipe, with sauce that’s thick and creamy, and doesn’t use flour or cornstarch to thicken.

The recipe you’ll find here is not classic Italian spaghetti carbonara. The classic carbonara sauce has eggs and parmesan cheese, but my recipe uses cream, butter, and a local processed cheese.

This recipe won’t tell you exactly how much salt or pepper to add — add as much as you need and taste the sauce as you do.

    Serves about 6 people.

    Ingredients

    • salt
    • pepper
    • 1/4 cup butter
    • 1 Tbsp olive oil
    • 1 medium red onion, minced
    • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
    • 1 large chicken breast half, sliced into cubes (or 2 small breast halves)
    • 1 cup canned sliced mushrooms
    • 1 cup all purpose cream
    • 1/4 cup water
    • 1/4 Eden cheese, grated
    • 250 grams bacon, cooked until crispy then cut to small pieces
    • about 250 grams spaghetti, prepared according to instructions

    Procedures

    1. Cook spaghetti pasta according to its instructions. Make sure not to cook too much or it might get soggy! We want it al dente
    2. Slice the chicken breast half into cubes, then season with salt and pepper
    3. In a medium or large sized frying pan, melt the butter then add olive oil.
    4. When the butter and oil mixture is hot and bubbly, add minced red onion and cook until a little translucent, then add garlic.
    5. Add the sliced chicken and stir fry.
    6. Add the mushrooms. Make sure to cook until the chicken slices are slightly browned.
    7. Pour the all purpose cream and water and mix well.
    8. Add grated cheese then mix well again
    9. Add as much salt and pepper as you like, but taste as you go to avoid a sauce that’s too salty.
    10. If the sauce is too thick, add a little more water and salt. If it’s too thin/runny, let it simmer until thick enough for your liking.
    11. Serve immediately with the spaghetti you cooked earlier. Add as much sauce as you like into the pasta.

Enjoy! I hope it turns out well.

    Leftover creamy carbonara sauce?

You can place leftover creamy carbonara sauce in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat, then serve with pasta.

I haven’t tried freezing this carbonara sauce so I’m not sure if it will reheat well after becoming frozen. But the sauce will last longer in the freezer — maybe for up to 2 weeks?

You can also use the leftover sauce in your omelette or in your sandwich, or wherever you think it will go well. 😆

My preferred brand of Spaghetti pasta

    royal-premium-spaghetti

I like Royal Premium Spaghetti because based on my experience, the pasta doesn’t easily sog. It’s perfect for those who try to achieve “al dente” spaghetti! 😀
